Election Day

Well, it's Tuesday, November 4, 2008 and this is probably one of the more significant days in my lifetime thus far.  I would be lying if I said that I did not feel a sense of privilege to be here in this country, in this city, on this day.

No matter the outcome later this evening, there is something special about Election day.  While it seems like the simplest of tasks - drawing a line, filling in a bubble, punching an electronic screen, the meaning behind it carries great significance.  Often times, our democracy is taken for granted and Election day serves as a constant reminder that we are fortunate.

It is worth noting that many in the world do not even have the right or access to cast a vote.  Their liberties, if they are lucky enough to have any, are given to them by dictators, monarches, rebels, military leaders just to name a few.

So this morning at approximately 7:15a.m. I walked arm in arm with Andy around the block to cast my vote in the 2008 election.  Tonight, history will be made - we will see our country elect the first black American president or the oldest American president with the first female American as his vice president.

I have always felt a great deal of pride in my country on Election day and  today is no different.  I am thankful that I am old enough now to fully appreciate my right to vote and to comprehend what is about to happen this evening.

I will be back to publish the results and my thoughts once we know who the president-elect is.  In the meantime, I'll sign off for now with a typical politician ending..."God Bless America!"

Great post Kim. I felt the same amount of pride walking out of the voting booth. I'm very fortunate to have someone of your character to share in this experience.

One thing that's nagging me, though, is that you didn't mention listening to Merle Haggard. Waiting for later maybe? :)
